Astrology studies the celestial bodies affects on humanity. In particular human fate, destiny, and personality were described by the celestial influences of the stars and planets. The roots of Astrology can be traced back to the first or second century BC. Many ancient cultures such as the Egyptians, Babylonians, and Chinese practiced forms of Astrology. Although, the methods of Astrological forecast differed slightly from culture to culture there still remained many fundamental similarities between them.

For example Chinese Astrology which evolved convergent to western Astrology had some major differences. The most fundamental difference being was the use of the moons 28 day cycle through the heavens. The earliest Chinese zodiac divided the lunar cycles into 4 groups each corresponding to a different season and 7 sub groups corresponding to specific “lunar mansions” in the season. The seasons were given animal based names for example: Spring=The Green Dragon of spring, summer=The Red Bird of Summer, fall=The White Tiger of autumn, and winter= The Black Tortoise of Winter.

Even though the use of the moon in Chinese Astrology opposed the use of the suns “movement” through the celestial bodies in the Babylonian and Egyptian disciplines some similarities still existed. These similarities included the use of elemental attributes assigned to the planets. For example Saturn= Earth, Mars=Fire, Mercury=Water, Venus=Metal, and Jupiter=Wood. In addition to this similarity the Chinese zodiac also has 12 signs like its western counterpart.

The western use of the sun as the foci for Astrological studies stemmed from the pre heliocentric model of the universe. In particular Egyptians may have contributed greatly to the earth centered model of the solar system. They believed a giant dung beetle pushed the sun through the sky like a giant piece of dung. This earth centered model of our solar system coincidentally seemed to arise around 1.5 BC right around the time the Egyptian and Babylonian studies of celestial objects began.

As you may suspect there are different schools of thought on Astrology. Moon signs, Sun Signs, and animal signs exist in these various schools. The popular horoscope used in your local newspaper for example is probably based on your sun sign. In contrast the Indian Vedic school of thought would be more concerned with your moon sign. While the Chinese system uses animal signs in their zodiac and is based on the twelve year Jovan cycle. Some even speculate that there may be correlation between Astrological studies and the Tarot deck.

What is a Nakshatra?
Hindu astrology has a unique system of prediction that is based on the position of the moon in a given Nakshatra (constellation). There are twenty-seven nakshtras in all. Each one of them covers thirteen degrees and twenty minutes of the zodiac. Each Nakshatra is the head of a particular group of stars.

How does the Nakshatra affect you?
The zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatra zones. Therefore, while traversing the zodiac, the Moon has to pass through one of the Nakshatra. When you were born, the Nakshatra in which the Moon was situated at that time is called your Janma Nakshatra (birth nakshatra). Jan 22’s Full Moon in Leo: a Wolf Moon

Perhaps it’s my imagination or my eyesight, but astrology charts seem to ’show up’ better on my Stars Over Washington blog.

Well, that’s where I’ve posted Tuesday morning’s Full Moon 1Leo54 chart, aka a Wolf Moon because it occurs in January, and I’ve set the chart for Washington, DC where many wolves dwell and pace.

Remember the 2004 campaign’s Republican wolves in their TV ad? Strong and fearful image but I’m not sure they meant for it to look like GOP wolves were stalking America…but it did.

Plus, you know that some tribes considered the Wolf Moon to be in February–okay, whenever it was snowy and the wolves were hungry–guess it depended on your location and the seasonal lack of supplies.

All I know is: there are plenty of financial wolves at a lot of people’s too-flimsy doors just now, so I wish you (wherever you may be) safety from harm tonight.

I was riding into town on Thursday with my neighbor, a microbiologist, who spent the whole trip lamenting how his computer network had gone down the day before, costing him untold time and frustration. "Mercury retrograde," I said with a shrug. "I know you don't believe in astrology, but this is exactly the kind of thing that happens when Mercury goes retrograde." He left the following day on a month-long trip to the other side of the world, with arrival and return through Heathrow. As much as I wish him a smooth and safe trip, I suspect he's going to encounter more than a few glitches with luggage, hotel reservations, and equipment. Not that this sort of thing would convince a committed skeptic, especially one who has the wrong idea of what astrology really is. I recently ran across this pretty good definition in a book by Nick Campion and Steve Eddy: Astrology rests on two premises. One is that, as the entire universe is interconnected, one part can be examined to shed light on another even when the connections are not apparent.
The other is that a certain time possesses a certain quality. Therefore, by looking at the patterns of the stars and planets at any one moment, the astrologer makes deductions about life on Earth at the corresponding times. We live in a universe governed, shaped, and ruled by possibilities and probabilities so it would be helpful if we had a map of all the possibilities.
It would be helpful to be able to see the all bends and curves, the contours of potential, to know what lies up ahead, what lies around the corner, and to know the best path to take.
It would be helpful to understand the shape of all possibilities well enough to answer profound but basic questions, such as, why does the possible realm place such limits on what happens in time? Why does it allow such wonder? Why is the probable world so beautiful and exquisitely systematic and orderly, rather than pure chaos? Where are probabilities guiding us? What is certain in the future, if anything?
